Succa Aya – Memories from the countryside

long afternoon

long afternoon…

In quechua language Succa Aya means “Field of Sepultures”

The pre-Inca cemeteries are memories from the past, today it’s a district of Arequipa city and the name changed to Socabaya. Today I want to show you some views of these place ;-)

A road in middle of the fields

tell me where can I go to…

I had a customer there, so I needed to go several times to see his property. There is no many people walking the road, usually just the road… I walked several times those distances filled of farms, giant towers of high voltage and plenty of solitude, with that slow time until I decided to take the public transportation to my lair in that city. This is what I used to saw:

At day…
White ashlars

The white ashlar in Arequipa has volcanic origin, it is used from to delimit the farms to built palaces and banks, actually to cover them, in a seismic place is not good idea to have massive buildings.

Socabaya or Succa Aya is relatively far from the center of the city, so to go there I needed at least one hour and half of travel for the price of, in equivalence, thirty cents of US dollars. So it was not infrequent to end in middle of the sunset, always hidden behind the hills. But it’s a quite calm place to walk, and there is no more the heat of the day…

The district is bigger than the farms, there are places with houses of low and middle social-economic levels mixed with industries, so it’s not so peaceful as the farms habited by traditional families. They come usually from smaller cities and near is the penitentiary so it’s not so safe. In the public transport I’ve seen relatives of the inmates, sometimes they are dangerous too.

So the landscape is a bit desolated, with stray dogs silently walking and warden dogs barking the strangers (what includes me); dust and a desert without vegetation being replaced constantly by a desert of bricks. But the sunset also comes to give a bit of color to this part of the city:

Fight!: Photographing the same subject with different types of cameras – A

Film versus Digital
autumn void film

FILM: Canon EF film camera with Canon FD 50mm F1.8 and expired roll of Kodak Proimage 200

autumn void digital

Digital: Sony R1, APS-C camera. Processed in Capture One and vignetting artificially added to match film rendering.

I shot these ones in closer moments at twilight, when the light change so fast. As my goal is not to do technically perfect photographs but learn from other mediums, in this case 35mm film, to apply to my main digital camera I added vignetting and modified the saturation to the digital file. In so little light, both are long exposures, I couldn’t see how would be the depth of field and certainly the 1.8 in the canon lens has much thinner depth of field compared to the zoom lens in an aps-c camera.

I processed the photograph to match the one I liked more.

Modern APS-C Digital Camera (Fujifilm X-E1) versus Old APS-C Digital Camera (Sony R1)
curviline x-e1

Modern APS-C camera. Fujifilm X-E1 with Fujinon F1.4 R lens.

curvinline r1 version

Old APS-C camera. Sony R1 with fixed Carl Zeiss lens set to match the Fujinon lens focal length.

I’m happy with both versions. I processed the RAW files of both cameras to match colors and cropped both for aesthetical reasons. The Fujifilm has more pixels, the lens seems sharper and with more contrast but with the Sony I can get great results too, at least at day.

Film versus cheap Cellphone

trees of ayavirir

Cellphone camera. 2 mpx. and focal length equivalent to 35mm in 35mm format. Cropped slightly to match better the film version.

In this point the bad quality of an expired roll of film and the poor lens and the tiny sensor of the camera makes obligatory I think the use of digital filters to compensate. But that’s for my personal taste. I edited the cell phone camera so much time ago, I know that today I could get it closer to the film one.

Is there a winner?

Nope, shot anything you want, use any tool which you feel comfortable, have fun, stop to read this blog turn off your tablet or computer and get out, any camera of today can record memories. Life is shorter to live it according to the thoughts of others.

I shoot with different cameras for curiosity and the bigger I printed is A3 (what is little to my architectural projects that can go beyond A0) Personally I just want comfort in a camera and composition in my mind, any camera today is good for that task ;-)

Canon EF (film camera) and my most expensive photograph

canon ef camera portrait and a blue shadow

Canon EF camera portrait and a blue shadowCanon EF camera portrait and a blue shadow

From 2014 I’ve used a Canon EF camera to shoot 135mm film. I discovered some days ago that it has a little defect therefore I cannot use it again. So I thought I could give some thoughts about this camera, more considering that there is no much data and when you search for this model instead the search end with Canon EF lenses.

Introduction

This camera was produced, according to Wikipedia, between 1973 to 1978 for the Canon FD mount that uses lenses with manual focus, I’m not in a hurry and that’s fine with my style, even more those lenses are cheaper because they aren’t compatible with modern Canon Cameras that use EF mount lenses. Its most notorious characteristic to me is that it has a shutter priority design, so you can set the mounted lens in automatic, then you set the shutter and the camera chooses the aperture. Actually I just shot in manual, choosing the shutter speed and the aperture.

It’s not a simple camera as you can see:

canon ef camera repair a

anatomy lesson

One thing in what it’s better than the most of cameras of its age is that the shutter speed goes to thirty seconds, wow!, usually the cameras of those times gave you from one to four seconds as minimum shutter speed so if you want a SLR camera with classic dials and design but not limited to have to use another tool, a light meter, then it’s your camera. The maximum shutter speed is 1/2000.

It’s everything you would need as mirror lock up, self timer, depth of field preview, or multiple exposures, to develop your creativity and nothing unnecessary. The only thing I’d love to have would be an interchangeable viewfinder because for my way to shooting I use much waist level style but that was reserved to the higher end model Canon F-1. This camera was thought for old people that would appreciate the simplicity of this machine, simplicity that goes in a pure design.

Design

black beauty

This camera is also known as the black beauty. And it has a gorgeous design. Pure metal with strong and proportioned lines. The plastic cameras although not so elegant are easier to clean. Said that there is a great defect I chose to correct: it has a plastic covering with a faux texture of leather. As a designer I don’t like that my designs lie. If you do something with plastic then give it a nice texture of plastic; if you put a leather texture then use real leather. Hence I bought a thin layer of leather and repaired it until it was according to my desire. Also I painted the white letters to avoid reflections when using graduated filters and also to don’t draw the attention upon me. I’m not a collector, nor a photographer, so I took utilitarian decisions. This was the body before:

canon ef repair b

And this is the body now:

canon ef camera yellow a

canon ef camera yellow b

It feels nice in the hand, and although it’s not a little camera it’s not so huge as the cameras with autofocus of later years.

The design is so clean that in the top of the body the shutter button, the shutter speed dial and the winding lever are integrated in one component; so you can shot very quickly. Actually I found it quicker than, for example, the Fujifilm X-E1 that although uses design clues of mechanical cameras the operation is slower, and harder to rotate the shutter dial and move your finger to press the shutter. In this old machine the shutter is an extension of your finger.

canon ef camera top

See the shutter dial, the designers put it in an ergonomic way so to rotate it you just pass your finger; something so simple but so quick as to use a modern dial because you can leave your eye in the viewfinder without need to divert your attention to check the dial. The flash shoe cover can be used to cover the viewfinder when long exposures.

The viewfinder in the first models had a microprism filter as a focusing aid, it’s a bit uncomfortable so I got another with a split screen. I shot it but it’s not so clear as I’d like it:

Taking photographs

canon EF camera sky

It would be a pleasure to shot it.

The best results I got it with tripod, a simple and standard shutter release cable and a three bubble level. The photograph took in that moment with the camera is this:

two clouds talk

Two clouds talk

Sadly there is a problem that I couldn’t repair nor identify; quite probably only the slow velocities of the shutter were working. So I got several ghostly photos, usually the long exposures are right. This is the kind of photos I get:

doubts

My most expensive photograph

Days ago I travelled to a lagoon so I took my digital camera and the Canon EF with a 50mm and 135mm lens. I walked a lot and in the end the weight of the two cameras were slowing me. But I finished a Portra 160 roll of film because the beautiful landscapes, so I was anxious to see the results: there were just one sucessful photograph, the rest where just overexposed till being just white…

This photograph is the survivor:

sad norse funeral

sad Norse funeral

So… How much that photograph costs?

  • Eighty dollars to repair the camera.
  • Fifty dollars in batteries to replace the old PX625.
  • Thirty dollars in rolls.
  • Fifty dollars in lab processing.

Then the total would be two hundred and ten dollars. So I decided to buy a cheap but more modern lightweight and compact camera, in Peru is harder to get technical service and to the places I need or want to go I can’t take so much weight. But if you are in other place and have access to a well working unit then it’s a highly recommended camera.

It’s a black beauty.

Doubts

Photo15_22Av1-XL

I was thinking in buying a medium format camera or even a large format camera. I think 35mm film photography it’s cool but it has the problem that it’s the format with lesser quality, and if I am going to spend money for every time I press the shutter so I’d prefer that the quality of the image worth the time and money spent on it.

But it’s not easy, I don’t live in US, EU or Japan, here in Peru the best places to process are in the small towns, but if I want true quality I have to import the film rolls, I’ve to import the batteries, if I want to repair I have to buy the manuals and repair it myself because the technics are forgetting to repair film cameras.

Ok, I bought from overseas rolls, batteries and parts to repair. I repaired the camera and now it’s working, but now there are again more problems: the laboratories haven’t skilled people to process the film, their scanners are old and domestic and certainly they are forgetting to process the rolls. The costs to get a kit to process in home the film are high, the scanners or macro adds to scan or photograph the films are high, if I change to medium format the prices are higher.

I don’t know if it worth it. Instead to worry in to photograph I am more worried, with film, in gadgets as scanners, tripods, shutter releases, etcetera.

I’m still experimenting with the Canon EF film camera, and with rolls of expired Kodak ProImage 200. I saw Mitsubishi and Samsung rolls so I’ll give them a try.

What you are seeing is actually a double exposure: two different images projected in just one single frame of film. With the Canon EF I can shoot multiple exposures, not just two. In this case I mixed a sunset with the moon (it’s the white shape above the tree almost in the bottom middle where was previously the sun) It has a nice result: the blue sky has mixed and colored with blue the shadows and clouds and give to the warm sunset tones a cool effect IMHO. To put the moon in that specific place I used the aperture marks in the viewfinder as a guide. If it would be a slide I would have to change the ISO to compensate but with the negative latitude that’s not necessary.

Well, it has to be a nice photograph because it was EXPENSIVE, lol. You’ve to buy a roll, take it to the lab, import batteries and a long etcetera. I am not sure if the longitudinal marks are from the camera (I think not) or from the lab (perhaps) or from the expired film (I hope so)

Anyway, I’ll see if I can take sea photographs, tomorrow I’m travelling to the coast. It would be fantastic to go to the beach a bit ;-)

I’m going to sound old but well, here it comes: when I was a child the memories were recorded with 135mm film cameras. They were compact cameras and very popular, in home dad had a Olympus Pen, a Zenith (Olympic version) and a defective Canon EF camera, this is a FD mount camera, before they made cameras with autofocus and the lenses were EF mount. I am preparing the review of that camera because I don’t see much data in Internet. I downloaded the manual from Butkus and sent him a donation for the kindness.

Father gave me that camera and I could repair it, I bought new weincell’s batteries and a spare body for eleven bucks in ebay to replace the damaged parts. Some time ago I took photographs of Ayaviri city but the lab did a horrible work with the negatives so I found a better laboratory. I used expired Kodak ProImage 200 film to try the camera. I processed the jpeg photos in Photo Ninja, the most adjustment was correction of contrast and nothing more; few have more corrections to reduce color casts and bands for the expired roll I guess.

I took the next photograph, that I published days ago, almost at night. The battery wasn’t working so it took just a one second exposure. Fortunately it could see the leaves and the photo resulted as I wanted.

(Please, have in mind that I took these pictures as a test)

This was a multiple exposure photo. The camera has a button to take that kind of photos, just one has to adjust the ISO dial in relation to the number of exposures, but this was for an error, my error, at loading the film roll. So it wasn’t intentional…

I liked the photographs so I bought Kodak Portra 160 and I am going to buy also Fuji astia 100 and velvia 50.

But…

Actually I still see film photographs, at least from 35mm with a personal defect: They look a bit dreamlike, that’s fantastic if one wants that effect but when I was a child I always felt betrayed at see the photographs different from my memory record. So to record the things I see I prefer a digital camera with all of its defects. By the way I feel the same for digital medium format, it has so much sharpness that to me is unreal, also different to my idea in my mind of reality, something similar to the movies in 4K.

But to other things, more abstract or that I like to give a dreamlike atmosphere I would be glad to use film. And about filters upon digital files I don’t find much sense, you have to pay expensive software. If you want a film aspect so shoot film, if you want a digital aspect so shoot digital. I find it reasonable if the film preset is to tune colors and have a better image, as a starting point, but not to mimic.

Today I picked up the roll from the lab. Fortunately with better luck. And the photos went well considering, among other things, that the camera is broken, the roll expired at least five years ago and I put the roll wrongly :D

But I like how they come so I am going to try more film rolls and make sure that the camera this time is perfectly working.
